Skating Season is Here!

Silver Spring Ice Skating is the first outdoor rink in the region open for the 2015-2016 ice skating season

The skating season has begun at Silver Spring Ice Skating, the first outdoor rink to open in the DC region. The rink is open every day through March 25, including all holidays, for public ice skating with skate rentals, plus parties, private rentals, lessons, and more.

Rink manager, Lance Curran, is proud to say that Silver Spring is always the first to open in the DC region. As he explains, a special paint is applied to the ice surface enabling the chillers under the ice surface to do their work. “The painted ice looks nice, but it’s also important for reflecting the sun’s energy on our outdoor rink,” says Curran. “We’re open when it is warm, snowing, or raining.” The rink is protected from precipitation by the swooping roof of the pavilion, which glows with hundreds of multi-color lights in the evening hours. At 106 feet by 57 feet, the rink is an ideal size for all levels of skaters. For toddlers, double bladed skates are available, and to keep new skaters steady on the ice, penguin-shaped skating aids are provided on request. To maintain the smooth ice surface on a daily basis, Silver Spring has a brand new Zamboni this year. The latest updates, special events, and photos are posted on Facebook, Silver Spring Ice Skating at Veterans Plaza that has more than 25,000 followers. Visit the website for hours and rates, www.SilverSpringIceSkating.com. Come on over and enjoy the outdoors at the Silver Spring Ice Skating Pavilion at Veteran’s Plaza, 8523 Fenton Street, at the Silver Spring Civic Building. Just 200 yards from the D.C. border, the convenient location is surrounded by shops and restaurants. Plenty of parking is available, free on weeknights after 8 p.m., and all day on weekends.
