Teenage Students Present 'Cabaret'
A Cast of Talented Teenage Actors Perform the 1998 Revival Version of the Hit Musical at The Highwood Theatre.

The Students’ Theatre division of The Highwood Theatre is excited to present the 1998 revival version of the hit musical Cabaret. With a book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Cabaret takes a hard look at the seedy underbelly of pre-World War II Berlin in the wake of the roaring twenties. Featuring new musical additions and a revised book, the edgy 1998 revival version of Cabaret highlights the growing strains of a nation and people during the infamous rise of the Nazi regime.
Set in 1931 Germany in the tawdry, decadent Kit Kat Klub, young American writer Cliff Bradshaw arrives to work on his new novel. He settles into a boarding house whose German landlady has a Jewish beau, begins giving English lessons to the anti-semitic Ernst Ludwig, and enters into a relationship with the mysterious young singer Sally Bowles. All of the action is overseen by the provocative Emcee, as we watch the hopes and dreams of the characters crumble to dust under the heels of the fear and hate that dominate the political climate. The danger of intolerance, the tenacity of the human spirit and the crushing devastation of heartbreak are all brought to light in this compelling story.
The 1998 version of Cabaret is directed by Matthew Nicola with musical direction by Kevin Kearney and features an immensely talented all-student cast. The Highwood Theatre’s latest production allows young actors the opportunity to tackle challenging roles, explore mature themes and grow as performing artists in a professional environment. Encouraging the teenage cast to take risks and collaborate is part of Highwood’s mission to build community through theatre and create a unique experience for everyone involved. Choreography is by Imani Gaston; Fight Choreography by Sarah Scott. Performances run March 18th - 20th at The Highwood Theatre in downtown Silver Spring.
