Takoma Park Driver Dies in Fiery Crash

The single-car accident happened about midnight in Silver Spring.

A Takoma Park man died in a fiery car crash early Wednesday in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County Police.

Authorities say the single-vehicle accident occurred just after midnight at the intersection of Gist Avenue and Ray Drive in Silver Spring.

Investigators say a 2012 Volkswagen Passat was southbound on Gist Avenue. In the area of Ray Drive, the car left the roadway, struck a tree and caught on fire.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as Mohammed Shafiq Khan, 21, of the 7500 block of Chestnut Avenue of Takoma Park, died from his injuries at the scene.

This collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
