Local Students Win Optimist Oratorical Contest

 

Timonium, MD, March 20, 2013:  Ian Michael Moore and Mary Norris, students at St. Joseph’s School in Cockeysville, won the Optimist Club of Timonium’s Oratorical Contest held Monday, March 18, 2013. Twelve children participated in this competition. The contest theme was “Why My Voice is Important.”

Moore and Norris received Official Medallions for the honor. In addition, Moore and Norris will be sent to the Maryland/South Delaware (MDSD) District, Zone 6 contest where they will compete against winners from other Optimist Clubs in the area. The winners of the Zone 6 competition will be sent to the District Contest in Ocean City, MD with the chance to win a $2500 scholarship.

“Ian and Mary did a wonderful job presenting their speeches on the question posed to them,” Club President Raymond “Skip” Sheeler said. “The members of our Optimist Club have no doubt that Ian and Mary each has a bright future ahead.”

The Optimist Club of Timonium has been participating in the optimist Oratorical Contest for fifty-five years and has been active in the community since 1958. Other programs and service projects that the club is involved in include Shop With A Cop, Youth Appreciation Week, fundraising for the Sidney Kimmel Pediatric Cancer Center, The Young Artists Showcase in conjunction with the Towson Arts Collective, PAL Day on the Farm where, among other things, urbanized children learn that milk comes from cows, and many more.
