Baltimore County 4-H Fair Comes to Timonium

Are you looking for something to do with the kids after the holiday weekend?

This week, the Baltimore County 4-H Fair comes to the , from July 6 - 10 and it's geared towards children.

The 4-H fair is structured around exhibits, helping educate kids on how the agricultural world works and where the food that we eat comes from.

“They can milk a cow, they can dig up potatoes and soybeans, make some ice cream,” said Janice Coronoes, the president of the fair. “Just so they realize where the things they eat come from.”

The fair is open to the public beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday and runs to 11 p.m. every day this week.

Several special events scheduled during the week are the Cake Auction at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 7, where 4-H members auction their prize-winning desserts. Basket Bingo is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, July 8,  in the cow palace.

The Livestock Auction is scheduled for Saturday night where the beef, lamb, pork and goat livestock projects, raised and fed by 4-H youth, are evaluated for marketability and top yield.

And, of course, there will be some line dancing.

The Pancake Breakfast will be held from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Sunday and then a Fashion Revue will round out the weekend at noon Sunday.

“It’s a small fair. The kids that come have a good time,” Coronoes said. "The people that come are impressed with the exhibits that the kids do.”

Beginning tonight, there will be the judging of the exhibits that the 4-H youth have put together. The exhibits include sewing, cooking, baking, flowers, vegetables, science projects and family arts and crafts. Ribbons will be placed on the exhibits, which will be on display all week, so visitors can see how the kids did.

Several teenagers who will be showcasing their work tonight have been participating since they were 5 years old. This is the fair's 47th year.

“They have grown up in it,” Coronoes said of the 4-H youth. “They do a really nice job with their exhibits, they are multi-talented. They don’t do just one thing, they do all of it - cooking and sewing, plus even animal exhibits with pigs and sheep. “

So bring the kids out to the Maryland State Fairgrounds this week for a good time and show them what agriculture is all about.
