Gas Leak Fixed, York Road Reopened: Baltimore County Officials

The basement under a strip mall had elevated levels of gas after a line was struck Monday afternoon, officials reported.

LUTHERVILLE-TIMONIUM, MD — Several businesses were evacuated and York Road was closed Monday afternoon in Timonium due to a gas line break, according to Baltimore County emergency officials. By 4:15 p.m., the State Highway Administration reported York Road had reopened.

Emergency personnel said that the issue required about two hours to clear after dangerous gas levels were detected under some businesses.

BGE was working at the scene when crews struck the gas line in the 2000 block of York Road around 2:11 p.m., county officials reported.

People were cleared out from multiple businesses as a precaution, and drivers were advised to avoid the area. The affected businesses were in a strip mall from 2007 to 2023 York Road, authorities reported.

"Dangerous levels of gas were found in [the] basement under businesses," Elise Armacost, director of public affairs for the Baltimore County Fire Department, posted on social media.

Due to the gas line break, York Road was closed between Crowther Avenue and Belfast Road for about two hours.

The gas was shut off, crews ventilated the area, and after 4 p.m., gas returned to normal levels, officials said.

No injuries were reported, according to authorities, and all lanes had reopened on York Road after 4 p.m.
