Canker Sores: Causes, Treatment and Prevention

Tips on dealing with those pains in the mouth.

Ouch. Having canker soresโ€”those white or gray bumps inside your mouthโ€”is a real pain. And try as you might not to further irritate them with your tongue, sometimes it feels impossible to leave them alone. Hereโ€™s some information to help you understand where canker sores come from, steps you can take to avoid them and what to do (or not do) if you get them.

Causes

Ever bite at the flesh on the tongue or inside of your cheek? Itโ€™s a common habit that can cause canker sores. As can damage from braces or ill-fitting dentures. Certain foods, especially those that are highly acidic like lemons, pineapples and tomatoes, may also trigger or exacerbate them. Additionally, research supports the notion that nutritional deficiencies in iron, zinc, folic acid and vitamin B12 can be a culprit.

Help and Prevention

ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Make a conscious effort NOT to injure the inside of your mouth or tongue by biting. Many people donโ€™t even realize theyโ€™re doing it.

ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Ensure that all orthodontia and dentures fit well.

ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Keep a food diary, making note of the foods you are eating before a canker sore emerges. You may be able to isolate your triggers.

ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Take a multivitamin and make sure your diet includes a variety of nutrient-filled fruits and vegetables.

ยทย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Brush your teeth after every meal, floss regularly and drink lots of water to keep your mouth free of irritants.

Most canker sores will go away on their own in a week or so. Rinse your mouth frequently with salt water and apply over-the-counter products for pain. Try not to touch it with your tongue! Canker sores heal faster when you leave them alone.

Severe cases with large or multiple sores may call for prescription medications, including chlorhexidine mouthwash or corticosteroids.
