The Park School of Baltimore Parents' Association presents The Learning, the second film in Park's ongoing Cultural Diversity Film & Discussion Series. Ramona Diaz, Park parent and director & producer of The Learning, will facilitate a discussion and Q&A after the screening.
(Ramona is also the director of the award-winning film, Imelda.) The event is free and includes a sampling of food provided by the evening's co-sponsor, Katipunan – the Filipino-American Association of Maryland.
The Learning follows four Filipino teachers – Dorotea,
Angel, Grace, and Rhea – through an entire school year in Baltimore, beginning with their job interviews back home and their journey here. Across the school year's changing seasons, the film chronicles the sacrifices they make as they try to maintain a long-distance relationship with their children and families, and begin a new one with the mostly African-American students whose schooling is now entrusted to them. Their story is at once intensely
personal, as each woman deals with the implications of her decision to come to the U.S., and fundamentally public, as they become part of the machinery of American education reform policy.
The film was a selection of the 2011 Maryland Film Festival, has appeared as part of the acclaimed PBS
Point of View (POV) programming, and was part of the Sundance Documentary Edit and Story Lab.
