Sharon Lamb, co-author of Packaging Girlhood and Packaging Boyhood to speak at The Park School

The Park School Parents’ Association invites you to an evening with Sharon Lamb, Ed.D. Distinguished Professor of Mental Health at the UMass-Boston in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology, mother, clinical psychologist, and co-author of Packaging Girlhood and Packaging Boyhood.

In these books, Lamb and her co-authors expose the stereotypes that marketers and the media sell to our children: girls are “encouraged to use their ‘voices‘ to choose accessorizing over academics, sex appeal over sports, and boyfriends over friends; boys‘ images encourage slacking over studying, power over empowerment, and being cool over being oneself.” They offer advice to parents about how to talk to kids about these troubling and very limiting images, and provide tools to help them resist these messages and learn to make their own choices about how to live their lives.

Dr. Lamb's talk is free and open to the public. Her books will be available for purchase and she will sign copies after the talk.
