3 Killed in Fatal Crash Off Interstate 83 Ramp

Three people were killed in a crash reported Tuesday afternoon between Interstates 83 and 695 in Baltimore County.

Before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, a citizen called police to report a vehicle off the road on I-83 south at the ramp to the Outer Loop of I-695, according to a report from Maryland State Police.

When troopers arrived, they found a passenger car broken into several pieces, the report stated. Three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to preliminary investigation, police said the vehicle was on the ramp from I-83 south when for unknown reasons it traveled from the highway into a heavily wooded area to the left of the road, where it eventually hit a large tree.

Due to the impact, the vehicle broke into several pieces, according to the report, which said that troopers were unable to determine whether the individuals were wearing seat belts because of the damage.

Police said it was unknown when the collision occurred, noting it was difficult to see the crash site from the road. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police were at the site collecting evidence and information Tuesday evening.

The bodies of the three individuals were being taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies. Their identities will be released once they are confirmed by the medical examiner and next of kin has been notified, police said.

Two lanes on the ramp from I-83 south were closed for police investigation as of 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to transportation officials. Closures from the crash reportedly began at 3:34 p.m.
