Getting kids ready for back to school

Before you know it, the kids are heading back to school.  Will you be ready?  At Shihan Marc’s Karate Academy kids are constantly learning discipline and focus—two important skills all students need during their days in school.  Even during the summer months, Shihan Marc’s students are kept on a schedule to prepare them for each and every upcoming test.  This routine is paramount for the student to keep them mentally and physically engaged during a season when there is little structure in a child’s life.

In order to prepare kids for back to school, Shihan Marc Pamfilis a 6th degree black belt who has been teaching children for nearly 40 years, has a few tips you can use to prepare your child(ren) for their return to routine.  His methods will ensure an easier transition back into school. “Almost all people, regardless of age, thrive on routines and schedules.  Like sleeping and eating, your body needs to live on a program. By preparing in advance, you are more likely to be successful if you have acclimated to a certain timeline.”

Start early August is the month to begin transitioning your child back into a routine.  Depending on age, the earlier you start a routine, the more chance you will not be met with resistance. The old saying is it takes 21 days to form a habit.

Talk to your child By mentioning the return to school weeks before, you are mentally preparing him/her for what lies ahead. Speak to them about how exciting the new grade will be and what they will be learning this year. Expect frowns and scowls, but know the message is beginning to sink in.

Begin a fun routine Maybe you have already heard school is ‘boring’ and they ‘never do anything fun’.  Give your child a routine that is fun.  Shihan Marc recommends enrolling your child in an activity or a class that is once or twice a week.

Back to School Supplies Buy supplies early while everything is still available. Let your child start to get organized with your help. Having the supplies in their room is a subtle reminder of what is to come. Plus, kids like things that are new.

Celebrate the New Year Kids can have anxiety about the new grade even when returning to a familiar school setting. Make a big deal about it; have a back to school party or barbecue with their friends and family. Go to a special dinner to launch the new school year or take them for a special end of summer treat.

Visit your school Whether a new student or returning, take your child by and check out what may be new.  Play on the playground, talk about who they will see—teachers, friends, faculty.

Remember, planning ahead pays off.  Almost all children will have to readjust to returning to school.  By taking these steps, your child will have an easier time getting reacquainted and a stronger start that can lead to a more successful school year.
