GREAT ESCAPE: The Sugarloaf Festival
Patch finds a fun parents' night out each week so you can keep your babysitters employed!

The Sugarloaf Festival is not a pompom-and-popsicle-stick kind of craft show.
that drew hundreds of artists and thousands of attendees last year.ย
If youโve attended before, youโll know that the artisans tend toward jewelry made from ceramics, enamel, gold and silver. The textile craftspeople use antique linens, lace, tapestry, silk and leather. The pottery and porcelain is hand-made, glazed, and intricately painted. Even the food is gourmetโbut you can probably hunt down a hot dog stand.

More than 250 master artisans from around the country will be selling their wares at the Maryland State Fairgrounds this weekend. Starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 29, you can browse thousands of entirely unique, one-of-a-kind handmade crafts, which include pottery, sculpture, glass, potpourri, jewelry, fashion, furniture, scrimshaw and photography.
Some of the artisans will be demonstrating their crafts. Learn how to make your own masterpieces by watching live demonstrations of iron forging, papermaking, wheel-thrown pottery and copper spinning.

Make it an early evening out. Most of the crafts are elegant and pricey, and the kids are less likely to fall in love with a kinetic wind sculpture than you are. The festival is open until 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 5 p.m. on Sunday.
If you do bring the kids, there is childrenโs entertainment in the form of a ๏ปฟMiddle-Earth costume theater๏ปฟ, where 90 young participants can dress up as villagers, mermaids, gypsies, pirates and knights in shining armor. Plus, some of the crafts are geared toward youngsters, like handmade puppets and puzzles.
There will also be steel drum music, a pianist and an ๏ปฟunusual musician๏ปฟ who somehow took playing his recorder far beyond the third-grade level.

Admission is $9 at the door, $7 if you ๏ปฟbuy tickets online ahead of time๏ปฟ, and children under 12 are free. For more information call 800-210-9900.
