
It seems that those citizens signing up for Medicaid, or those being forced into Medicaid by the new Obamacare rules, will probably be surprised to learn that their estates canย eventually be held liable and responsible for their provided healthcare.
While this โreimbursementโ has been a requirement for many states for the past twenty years, as part of the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program, it was only used to recover expenses arising from nursing home and long-term care facilities.
Now, Obamacare has expanded the coverage for which it can seek โreimbursementโ, and use liens on assets to recover any monies โowedโ for medical services in addition to long-term care.
While I certainly donโt oppose this concept of seeking โreimbursementโ, I do believe that everyone signing up for this heavily-subsidized government-funded program should be made aware of these significant changes before enrolling.
