Plein Air Quick Draw at the Baltimore County Ag Center
Starting with a blank canvas - artists compete to create masterpieces in 2 hours.
Plein air is painting outside - rather than in a studio. The term comes from the French ‘en plein air’, meaning ‘in the open air’. Popularized by Impressionists who were particularly interested in the influence of changing light and the effects of light on color when outdoors, plein air painting is now flourishing as its own art form.
As part of its ongoing exploration of the intersection between art and agriculture through its Arts on the Farm Initiative, MARC, in partnership with the Baltimore County Commission for Arts and Science, is pleased to host the first Arts on the Farm Plein Air Quick Draw. A Quick Draw event is timed. All artists begin with a blank canvas, and begin to paint when the farm bell rings. When the farm bell rings a second time, all artists are set up in the judging area where pieces are judged, awards presented, and sale of the pieces commence. MARC hopes that this will become not only an annual event, but a must-do event for plein air artists of all levels.
