There were 11 people hospitalized after more than a dozen vehicles, including a private ambulance and tractor-trailer, crashed on the Baltimore beltway and caused a two-hour closure Monday night, Maryland State Police reported.

Authorities responded after 9 p.m. to the crash, which occurred on the ramp from the outer loop of Interstate 695 to southbound I-83, according to the report.

Police said one vehicle on the ramp hit a jersey wall and became disabled in the road, setting off a chain reaction as multiple vehicles crashed into it.

All lanes of the outer loop of I-695 were closed from approximately 9 to 11 p.m., police reported.

The outer loop was shut down for several reasons, the report stated: “...due to the large crash scene, the ongoing investigation, and to enable ambulances to access the scene and tow trucks to clear the vehicles from the roadway.”

State troopers, Baltimore County police and the State Highway Administration assisted with clearing the scene and detouring traffic, according to police.

After 11 p.m., police said debris cleanup was continuing and traffic was getting by on the right shoulder; by Tuesday morning, the road was clear.
