3 Crashes In I-695 Work Zones Friday Morning, Police Say

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Five people were injured in three work zone crashes Friday morning on Interstate 695, according to Maryland State Police. Two workers and three civilians were hospitalized in the crashes.

Two of the collisions happened in the I-695 inner loop work zone at Harford Road, while another occurred on the outer loop of I-695 at Providence Road, according to officials.

At 3 a.m., police said an SUV driver hit the back of an unoccupied pickup truck in a work zone on I-695 at Harford Road. The truck was pushed into two men working in the area.

Both workers were taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, one by ambulance and another by helicopter, officials reported.

The woman driving the SUV was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. Police said there was no indication of alcohol or drug impairment in this case.

All lanes of I-695 were closed at Harford Road for the investigation until approximately 5:45 a.m., according to the State Highway Administration.

In a separate crash, police said one person was hospitalized after failing to merge in a construction area on the outer loop at Providence Road around 2:30 a.m.

Two vehicles collided in the area where the lanes merge and went into the woods, according to officials. One driver was taken to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

In the first of the three I-695 work zones crashes early Friday morning, police said that a truck carrying construction equipment was hit from behind by a driver who did not slow down while entering the work zone. The truck was slowing at the time, officials reported.

The crash occurred after 1 a.m. on the inner loop of the beltway at Harford Road. The driver of the car was taken to Sinai Hospital by ambulance, police said.

All the drivers involved will be charged, Maryland State Police told WBAL Radio.
