COCKEYSVILLE, MD — A GoFundMe effort was kick-started over the weekend to help support the family of 18-year-old Ryan Duvall, who died Friday in a car crash in Cockeysville.
Baltimore County Police said officers responded to the fatal crash Friday around 9:45 p.m. The incident had happened near the intersection of Poplar Hill and Merrymans Mill roads.
Police said preliminary findings indicate the car was traveling southbound on Poplar Hill Road when it left the roadway for unknown reasons and collided with a tree.
Duvall, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene by a first responder.
A total of four people were inside the car at the time.
The driver and two other passengers were under the age of 18. Of the three, two were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The second passenger was listed as having non-life-threatening injuries, although they were also treated at a hospital.
Jamie Duvall, Ryan's sister, launched the fundraising initiative on Saturday.
"As we navigate this unimaginable grief, I’m raising funds to help my parents with funeral expenses and to support my mom as she takes time off work to mourn and heal," reads a post on the fundraiser. "Any contribution, no matter the size, means more than you know."
The 18-year-old was also remembered by Quest Martial Arts organizers, who said that Ryan was a long-time student.
The incident unfolded a day before a fatal shooting saw a Bel Air man fatally shoot his 74-year-old father-in-law in the Phoenix community.
Tony Alcala, who lives in the area, told WBAL that he was stunned by the back-to-back cases. "Twenty-four hours, two terrible incidents in the same neighborhood within miles of each other. (It's) awful, terrible," he said.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
