Baltimore County Mourns Loss Of Congressman Elijah Cummings

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, who chaired the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, died Thursday morning in Baltimore of complications from longstanding health challenges. He was 68.

Cummings represented Maryland's 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski: "Congressman Cummings believed in the power of government to improve lives, and he was a champion for those who most needed a strong voice speaking up on their behalf in Washington. He dedicated his life to the people of the Baltimore region, and we are all better for his selfless service. May he Rest In Peace. Sincerely, Johnny O, Baltimore County Executive"

Baltimore County Councilwoman Cathy Bevins: "Congressman Elijah Cummings was a true public servant, and leader, who dedicated his life to Baltimore. He advocated tirelessly to protect our democracy, and for social justice. His service to our communities will never be forgotten, but he will forever be missed. I send my most sincere condolences to his family. May he rest in peace."

Baltimore County Councilman Julian E. Jones Jr.: "Today, we have lost one of our best. A son of sharecroppers and a leader who understood what it takes to help lead our nation, the city of Baltimore, and the state of Maryland as a whole. Let us also not forget that in the midst of these troubling times, inspiration and motivation grow anew and that’s exactly what Congressman Elijah Cummings exemplified through his leadership and passion for making a difference! My warmest condolences and prayers to his family and friends as we undergo these rough times. His legacy will continue to inspire not only elected officials in Baltimore, but across our nation!"
