14 Roads Closed, 29K Power Outages In Baltimore County From Storm

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — More than 29,000 Baltimore County residents are without power Sunday morning, according to BGE. County officials said that 14 roads were closed, and traffic signals at intersections may be nonfunctional.
Drivers should treat intersections where power is out as four-way stops, and proceed with caution. See a list of road closures below.
The nor'easter that hit Maryland on Friday knocked out power to more than 400,000 BGE customers.

Most are expected to have their power restored by Sunday evening, according to BGE, which said that "final repairs to pockets of more heavily damaged areas" may continue until the middle of the week.
There were 29,183 outages in Baltimore County as of 2 a.m. on Sunday, based on the BGE outage map.

Officials said that weather conditions and downed trees have hampered efforts to restore power.
"High winds have persisted throughout today and have continued to down trees and limbs and limit the operation of bucket trucks used for overhead repairs," BGE reported Saturday night.
Also complicating repairs: crews have to remove damaged trees from power lines before they can fix them.

Utility workers from Chicago arrived Saturday evening to assist BGE with restoration efforts, and more personnel from other areas are expected to come on Sunday as well, officials said. As it assesses damage, BGE says it will communicate specific restoration times through outage restoration channels.
More than 75,000 BGE customers were without power system-wide as of 2 a.m. on Sunday; of those, more than 29,000 were in Baltimore County.
According to BGE, the company has restored power to 68,237 customers in Baltimore County since the beginning of the storm, which caused a total of 96,511 outages countywide and more than 400,000 statewide.
Restoration priorities are public safety and critical care facilities — including 911 centers, hospitals and pumping stations, according to BGE. Then the company tries to schedule restoration so the greatest number of customers will be restored, and it also gives consideration to those who have had outages for the longest amount of time, BGE said in a statement.

The following roads were closed Sunday morning:
- Catonsville: Woodlawn Avenue at Arbutus Avenue; pole down
- Cockeysville: Gibbons Boulevard at Jefferson Avenue; pole down
- Dundalk: Merritt Boulevard between Meadow Lane and Searles Road
- Essex: Old Eastern Avenue at Eyring Avenue; pole down
- Glen Arm: Long Green Pike and Williams Road; tree down
- Kingsville: Goettner Road at Cedar Lane; poles and trees down
- Kingsville: Mount Vista Road between Cedar Lane and Charlund Drive; poles and trees down
- Owings Mills: MD 129 at Caves Road; pole down
- Parkville: Old Harford Road at Taylor Avenue
- Phoenix: Poplar Hill Road at Paper Mill Road; tree down
- Pikesville: Stevenson Road from Halcyon Road to Hillside Road; pole down
- Rosedale: Babikow Road at Linda Avenue; pole down
- Upper Falls: Franklinville Road at Jericho Road; poles and trees down
- Windsor Mill: St. James Road between Lages Lane and Liberty Road; pole and trees down

There 36,919 BGE customers without power as of 6 p.m. on Saturday, according to BGE's outage map. Among those experiencing outages are the Perry Hall and Reisterstown branches of the Baltimore County Public Library and the Parkville Y.
There are multiple roads closed as of 6:50 p.m., according to county and state officials.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Saturday morning indicating that while winds have died down, drivers and pedestrians should use caution; loosened objects like tree limbs or other debris may topple over. Wind gusts of 40 to 45 may persist until the early afternoon, so additional power outages are possible.

Department of Public Works crews are working with BGE to open roads. To report trees in or blocking roadways, call the county at 410-887-5210.
Baltimore County firefighters are out in the communities conducting "windshield surveys" to check for damage and report back to the emergency operations center, officials said in a statement at 11:15 a.m.
