Baltimore County Theater to Show The Interview

Towson cinema decided against screening movie after threats against Sony, moviegoers.

Eastpoint Movies 10 in Dundalk is the only cinema in the Baltimore metro area that will show the controversial film The Interview for its Christmas Day opening.

Sony gave cinema operators the option last week of not showing the film amid threats of violence against moviegoers. Regal, AMC, Carmike, Cineplex and Cinemark—which operates the movie theater in Towson—announced that they would not screen it in the wake of the threat.

The movie company released the film online at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24. It is available on YouTube, Google Play and Xbox Video; it costs $5.99 to watch it on any of those platforms.

The Interview stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as a TV show host and producer tapped by the CIA to assassinate Randall Park, who plays Kim Jong Un; in real life, Kim Jong Un is the current leader of North Korea.

Originally, the movie’s Christmas Day release was to be screened at 3,000 theaters nationwide but the number shrank to approximately 300 after threats, according to Variety.

The FBI reported last week that North Korea was behind threats of 9/11-type violence against theatergoers seeing The Interview; however, CBS News said Tuesday that a former Sony employee may be the cyber attacker.

Eastpoint 10 manager Joe Jackson said the Baltimore County theater is adding staff but not extra security for The Interview’s opening, according to WBAL TV.

The Baltimore County Police Department would not comment on its plans for police presence at the theater, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Other Maryland theaters showing the movie are in Hagerstown and Brandywine.

Eastpoint Movies 10 is located at 7938 Eastern Avenue in Dundalk. The Interview will show at Eastpoint Movies starting Christmas Day (Thursday, Dec. 25) at 11:40 a.m.; and 1, 2:10, 3:30, 4:40, 6, 7:10, 8:30 and 9:40 p.m.
