Interested in learning a new language? The library offers Mango Languages to all customers with a valid Baltimore County Public Library card. Mango Languages, a language-learning database available on our website, offers 71 courses for native English speakers and English lessons in 17 languages. Its streamlined interface and adaptive learning system make Mango Languages perfect for learners of all ages and skill levels.

Database Features

Features include:

• Sentences including color-coded words by parts of speech, allowing users to easily identify patterns
• Cultural and grammatical notes with information on the correct usage of phrases and regional norms
• The ability to record oneself and compare to native speakers to observe proper pronunciations and mimic speech patterns accordingly
• Literal translation versus understood translation, which shows the meanings of idioms and phrases that do not directly translate to English
• Critical thinking exercises which integrate new vocabulary with learned material to ease understanding
• Specialty courses for cultural events such as Oktoberfest or specific areas of study such as Spanish legal terms, allowing users to focus on a particular area of understanding
• Timed exercises, which help to improve conversational response time
• Feature-length films in the target language, which strengthen listening skills and the understanding of cultural norms
