Bicyclists Plan Memorial Ride for Thomas Palermo

Approximately 100 cyclists rode in memory Monday night of Thomas Palermo, the 41-year-old bicyclist killed Saturday after after a Maryland bishop hit him, according to reports. The ride was one of two planned for this week.

Crank Mavens Monday Night Ride, which is usually a women’s group, opened the weekly ride to anyone who wanted to do something in memory of Palermo.

They set out from Mount Vernon’s Washington Monument to the scene of the fatal crash on Roland Avenue, growing in numbers from 50 to nearly 100, ABC 2 News reported.

In addition to the Monday night ride, bicycling advocacy group Bikemore has planned a memorial event for Thursday, Jan. 1.

Bicyclists will meet at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Square Park, at the corner of North Charles Street and University Parkway outside the Cathedral of the Incarnation, according to Bikemore.

Following a moment of silence, the group will ride to the crash site where Palermo was hit by a car, in the 5700 block of Roland Avenue.

Then the group will proceed to Hampden for a celebration of Palermo’s life at art studio Gallery 788 and Belgian brasserie De Kleine Duivel, both located at 3602 Hickory Avenue.
