Breeder Surrenders 53 Chihuahuas to Baltimore Shelter

It's Chihuahua-palooza at shelter in Baltimore.

A Baltimore shelter that was met with a deluge of Chihuahuas is now preparing the dozens of dogs for adoption.

A breeder surrendered 53 Chihuahuas to the Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS) this week, the shelter reported.

The owner agreed to give up the dogs following complaints to Baltimore City Animal Control that she could no longer keep up with them, according to a statement from BARCS.

The latest batch of residents was extraordinary for the nonprofit shelter, which receives an average of 33 animals a day.

“We take in over 11,000 dogs and cats every year,” BARCS Executive Director Jennifer Brause said, “and it’s situations like these that remind us even more about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets.”

“We are grateful that these dogs seem to be well cared for and hopefully we will find them homes quickly,” Brause added.

Once the Chihuahuas are vaccinated and spayed/neutered, they will be ready for adoption. The first group will be available on Friday, Sept. 25.

Several Chihuahuas were listed as adoptable pets on the BARCS website Thursday under the name “Poncho.” Brought in Sept. 22, the dogs ranged from two months to 6 years old.

Puppies must be eight weeks old before they may be adopted, according to BARCS.

Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS) is located at 301 Stockholm Street in Baltimore. Hours are 2 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.
