Councilman Marks Announces for Second Term, Citing Bipartisan Work in Towson

I am honored to announce that I will seek a second term on the Baltimore County Council representing the Towson area.

When I was elected, I pledged to be the bipartisan problem-solver that Towson so desperately needed, and that is exactly what I have done.  We’ve helped secure funding for Stoneleigh Elementary School and Dumbarton Middle School, new sidewalks and bike lanes, and the resurfacing of more than 12 miles of roads throughout Greater Towson.  And while I’ve championed the rebirth of Downtown Towson, I’ve insisted on a clear separation between the commercial core and Towson’s neighborhoods.  In fact, we downzoned the level of future development on 67 acres in Towson’s neighborhoods.

Working together:

We helped secure more than $55 million for school improvements, including the renovation of Dumbarton Middle School and additions at Stoneleigh Elementary School and Hampton Elementary School.

We passed numerous bills to spur redevelopment in Downtown Towson, but also pushed for measures to address the traffic that can be expected from new growth—the most extensive bike network in Baltimore County, bike parking requirements, and for a new transit circulator.

Within months of his Inauguration, we secured funding to fix Hillen Road in Towson Manor Village and repair sidewalks in Burkleigh Square.

By the end of 2014, Baltimore County will have resurfaced more than 12 miles of roads, including most of the streets in Rodgers Forge, West Towson, and Towson Manor Village; Edgewood Road in Anneslie; Stevenson Lane; and Pennsylvania Avenue.

We pushed for more police officers at the Towson precinct, held community meetings to improve public safety, and helped establish the Western Towson Citizens on Patrol.

The county restored full service to the Loch Raven public library—the first time neighborhoods like Loch Raven Village and Hillendale have had access to a full-service library in 20 years.

We helped create the Ridgely Manor Community Association, then worked with the Hess Corporation and NeighborSpace of Baltimore County to create a new park off Loch Raven Boulevard—at no cost to taxpayers.

After three summer storms that knocked out power, we pushed aggressively for better electrical service throughout Greater Towson.

These accomplishments involved working with my colleagues, the County Executive, and state legislators of different political parties.   I am proud of this bipartisan record—but also the times when I have said “no” to bad legislation and higher taxes.

Thank you to the citizens of the Fifth District with whom I have worked over the past three years, especially those community leaders who tirelessly advocate for the needs of the Towson area.
