The Department of Music presents Pastichio Furioso produced by Music for the Stage under the direction of Prof. Phillip Collister, the Early Music Ensemble under the direction of Prof. Marc Bellassai and in collaboration with students from the Department of Electronic Media and Film. This innovative “pastiche opera” based upon the famous epic poem Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto will include selections from numerous Baroque operas by Handel, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Purcell, Rameau and others and will be performed fully staged with period performance practice (A415) and projected scenic and dramaturgical elements.
The story of this pastiche, created by Phillip Collister, will follow Orlando’s quest to return to his home and his love after he mysteriously awakens on a deserted island (actually the moon in disguise). There, he meets a hippogriff (the symbol of impossibility and love) who offers him the chance to return home by choosing one of three portals. Orlando’s choice transports him not home but to the world of the Baroque instead where he becomes increasingly entangled in a world of Baroque characters driven by lustful passions, desires for power and revenge, blood thirsty for crusading wars, and generally seeking to enchant and ensnare Orlando forever. Orlando’s chances of returning to his own reality slip away until the hippogriff returns to offer him a second chance to choose a portal homeward. Orlando’s choice ends with surprising results
