Sport and Religion in a Secular Society

First presentation of two-part Plumbline series, Sports in Society.

Sport and religion would seem to have little to do with each other. After all, sport is about fun and games, and religion is about spiritual matters and the very serious issues concerning the ultimate meaning of life and death. However, outward appearances are often misleading, and in an increasingly secular society, we can find a number of things that connect sport and religion. Indeed, some have referred to sport as our “secular religion.” This is especially true because the decline of mainstream religion in America has meant that people are finding or seeking meaning in their lives in other places. On a more mundane level, individuals and families are replacing time spent in churches, synagogues, or temples with time spent following sports, playing sports, or taking kids to play sports. This session provides an opportunity to explore some of the ways that sport and religion may be connected, or at odds with each other, in contemporary America.  Presented by Dr. Howie Nixon, Sport Sociologist and Professor, Towson University.

Second presentation: Kids and Sports offered January 18th at 10:00 a.m. and January 22nd at 11:15a.m. (Childcare available for this presentation- call or email for details).
