Hogan, State Of MD, Trump: Marylanders Weigh In On Goucher Poll

Are you surprised by what a random sample of Marylanders said about Gov. Larry Hogan and President Donald Trump?

TOWSON, MD — What do Marylanders think of their governor and the president? Those conducting the Goucher Poll wanted to know, so the pollsters asked a random sample of hundreds of residents.

Marylanders have consistently given Gov. Larry Hogan high marks during his tenure as governor, with his ratings above 60 percent since October 2015, according to the Goucher Poll.

Most people approve of how Hogan is doing as the leader of the state.

  • 64 percent approve
  • 14 percent disapprove
  • 21 percent say they don't know

Although perceptions of Hogan are positive, opinions about the direction of the state hit a low since the governor took office in January 2015, according to the Goucher Poll.

  • 46 percent say Maryland is heading in the right direction.
  • 35 percent say Maryland is on the wrong track.

"At this time last year, 54 percent said Maryland was heading in the right direction," according to a statement from the Goucher Poll.

When asked how they think of their governor's views, almost half of Marylanders described Hogan as a moderate.

  • 48 percent think Hogan is a moderate
  • 27 percent see Hogan as a conservative
  • 14 percent say they don't know
  • 10 percent view Hogan as a progressive

Those polled said they thought Hogan kept the right amount of space between his office and the president's.

  • 45 percent said Hogan has distanced himself about the right amount from Trump
  • 24 percent said Hogan has distanced himself too little from Trump
  • 21 percent say they don't know
  • 8 percent think Hogan distanced himself too much from Trump

Most Marylanders surveyed said they did not approve of Trump's work.

  • 71 percent disapprove
  • 23 percent approve

The Goucher Poll is a survey conducted out of Goucher College under the auspices of the Sarah T. Hughes Field Politcs Center.
