Mom of Michael Phelps Delivers Message for Olympians from Towson Park: VIDEO

Debbie Phelps cheered on Team USA from the Towson park dedicated to Baltimore County Olympians.

TOWSON, MD — In anticipation of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz recently toured Olympian Park in Towson with the mother of the most decorated Olympian of all time.

Debbie Phelps, whose son is Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps II, had been to the park on York Road "once or twice," she said in a video of her recent visit.

Located in the heart of downtown, Olympian Park in Towson consists of open space off York Road near the traffic circle.

It honors Baltimore County athletes who have medaled in the Olympic and Paralympic games with monuments listing their accomplishments. (See the list at the end of this article.) Among them, of course, is a marker dedicated to Phelps, who has 22 medals to his name as he gets ready to make a splash in Rio during the 2016 Olympics.

"I am proud of all of our Olympians," Debbie Phelps said. "Go Michael! Go Team USA!"

The park includes plaques for the following athletes:

  • Swimmer Ian Jaryd Silverman, gold medal at 2012 Paralympic games in London, England
  • Swimmer Michael Phelps, four gold and two silver medals at 2012 Olympic games in London, England; eight gold medals at 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China; six gold and two bronze medals in 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece
  • Swimmer Katie E. Hoff, one silver and two bronze medals in 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China
  • Swimmer Jessica Long, three gold medals in 2004 Paralympic games in Athens, Greece; four gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the 2008 Paralympic games in Beijing, China
  • Swimmer Thomas G. Hannan, gold medal in 2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia
  • Swimmer Beth Botsford, two gold medals in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA
  • Discus thrower Larry Tyrone Hughes, gold medal in the 1996 Paralympic games in Atlanta, GA
  • Swimmer Anita Nall-Richesson, gold, silver and bronze medals in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain
  • Swimmer Wendy Weiberg-Weil, bronze medal in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada.

The 2016 Olympics will take place from Aug. 5 to 21 in Rio de Janeiro.
