More With Emma White

Part two of Dave Morgan's interview with a budding Towson singer-songwriter

Thank you all for checking back for the second part of my interview with local singer/songwriter, Emma White. In this installment, Emma shares some of her musical influences, as well as her thoughts about local music and how our area is faring in such a turbulent time for the business.

What spots around Towson have you performed?

In Towson, I've performed at The Recher Theatre, 8x10, Ottobar and, of course, Towson High School! I've been playing more shows in New York and Boston over the past couple years, but hopefully I'll be doing more in Baltimore soon!

In what direction, if any, do you see local music going?

I think it's really up to us Baltimoreans to keep a local music scene going. I've spent most of my time performing in New York and Boston just because I was in school up there for the past three years, but I'd like to play more in Baltimore. I'm having trouble deciding where to launch from, but I think Baltimore will always be home base; It makes the most sense.

I've been confused about it because of where the whole music industry is right now, but growing at a grass roots level is where it's at right now for new artists. With the state of the industry, the most effective way to build a career is to start locally and build a following by performing out. I think Baltimore is doing a great job with local music. I'm probably not the best person to ask about this, but I've noticed a lot more happening here than in past years though I think there could always be more. It seems to be something that the community wants more of.

Who are your musical influences?

It's hard to say… everything! When I was younger, standards, then country music—specifically Carlene Carter and the Dixie Chicks. I think we all go through different phases, though. When I really got into singing, Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill were definitely big influences. Then, soul like Tower of Power and Ray Charles. In college, I found out about singer/songwriter, Patty Griffin and fell in love. Justin Timberlake has also been a really big influence because of his versatility as a performer.

Where would you like to be as an artist/performer in the next 5 years? 10 years?

In 5-10 years I'd like to be an established performer playing and writing songs that move people!

Any upcoming local shows?

No local shows right now, but I'd really like to set some up! I had a showcase with 93.1 WPOC at Hightopps in July. It was so much fun! I hope to do it again soon.

There you have it, a closer look at a rising artist from right here at home. Knowing that there are individuals out there talented and dedicated enough to share their gifts makes it even more apparent that we as community need to do our part to support local music and arts. Get out there and get entertained!
