RUBELING & ASSOCIATES CHOSEN TO DESIGN 21st CENTURY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IN HISTORIC SCHOOL BUILDING

Rubeling & Associates Designs Replacement Catonsville Elementary School

Towson-based Rubeling & Associates – one of the region’s leading architecture and interior design firms – has been chosen by Baltimore County Public Schools to create a 21st Century learning environment in the original Catonsville High School built in 1925 and converted into the Bloomsbury Community Center in 1995. The upgraded school building will be Catonsville Elementary School at Bloomsbury for pre-Kindergarten through fifth grades and replace the existing Catonsville Elementary School nearby.

With additions, the new school will be 103,000 square feet, nearly doubling the size of the current Catonsville Elementary building of 56,600 square feet. The new school will increase student capacity to 700 from the current 405 and include technology and air conditioning upgrades throughout.

Rubeling & Associates worked closely with the community, as well as the Maryland Historic Trust, to ensure the historic presence of the existing building’s façade will be maintained.

“We are very pleased to be the firm chosen to design the new Catonsville Elementary School,” said John DiMenna, senior vice president/principal of Rubeling & Associates. “Educational facilities are one of our key areas of specialization and we are looking forward to giving the students, teachers, and community a new, modern facility in which to teach and learn.”

Construction is slated to begin May 2015 and run through July 2016, opening in August 2016 in time for the start of the new school year.

Catonsville Elementary School at Bloomsbury is the second historic school the firm has converted into a 21st Century learning environment. The 1920’s-built Stoneleigh Elementary School was completed in 2013.

Other projects Rubeling & Associates is currently completing for Baltimore County Public Schools include the $38 million renovation and additions to Hereford High School and the complete curtainwall replacement for Woodlawn High School.
