Speed Camera Added At Pleasant Plains Elementary School

TOWSON, MD - Two new speed cameras have been added for the coming school year, including one in Towson at Pleasant Plains Elementary School. The other new camera will be at Catonsville Elementary, Baltimore County police reported this week.

Speed cameras are installed where traffic data, crash history and citizen complaints indicate there is a problem, according to a statement from the county. They can be added or moved at the discretion of the police chief, the statement said.

They operate from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday. Those hours remain in effect even when schools are not in session and during the summer since activities may continue at the schools regardless, officials said.

When the speed camera program began in 2009 in Baltimore County, only 15 cameras were permitted by law. However, in 2011, the county council changed the policy to allow for portable speed cameras "where feasible."

There are 58 schools where cameras may be installed for the 2017-2018 school year, the Baltimore County Police Department announced this week:
