TOWSON, MD — A longtime tenant of The Shops at Kenilworth is closing for good. Stebbins Anderson will shutter Dec. 31.

The store has offered housewares, hardware, paint and furniture in Towson. In recent years, the business added Stebbins for Her, which sold handbags, jewelry and gift items inside the store at the shopping center off Kenilworth Drive.

After being in business for more than 150 years, the company reported it will be closing because of the retail environment as well as life choices.

"After 152 years, Stebbins Anderson will be closing its doors as of December 31st. It has been a pleasure serving our community and loyal customers, which makes this decision all the more difficult," the company said in a statement Tuesday. "The retail environment has become increasingly more difficult for small businesses, which factored into the decision, but we are also looking forward to starting the next chapter of our lives."

Though the message was sad, the company ended its farewell on a positive note, stating: "The good news is that we have one more holiday season to celebrate together so please stop by and say goodbye!"

The Shops at Kenilworth posted a thank-you note on Facebook: "Thank you, Stebbins Anderson for serving the Towson community for 152 years! We are disheartened and sad that you will be closing, but congratulate you for all the success you have had over the many years at The Shops at Kenilworth."

Stebbins Anderson has been at The Shops at Kenilworth since 1978, according to WBAL, which reported it evolved from its origins as a coal, lumber and hardware company over the years to include paint, wallpaper and other products.

The store suffered from "shrinking sales, you know, due to the internet," Stebbins Andersen owner Ken Knight told WBAL Radio. "It was really difficult."
