Summer Basketball Camp options for your child

Quick, Opinionated information on where to send your child for the best basketball summer camp experience.

Basketball Season is the time for kids to play for their recreation leagues, travel teams, JV or Varsity teams. As the season winds down, it's time for the serious players to start planning for an off season workout regiment. First, its imperative that all kids start to get involved with speed and agility training. Our next post will talk about the leaders in the area. *These ratings are based on our opinion after speaking w parents, staff, and attendees.

Regarding Summer Camps, there is one clear cut camp in Baltimore. The Premier Basketball Camp had a very successful year in 2013. All of their camps sold out last year, plus, their elite staff may be one of the top in the country. Led by Current Special Assistant to The Maryland Men's Basketball Coach, Juan Dixon, The Premier experience is second to none in the area. We spoke with parents whose kids have attended various camps in the area, and it seems that unless you are willing to travel 35 minutes to montgomery county attend the Georgetown Camp, there aren't any other strong options. Next, you have the Wooten Camp that does a very nice job with building your foundation and providing solid training. They have been around for 50 years and run a nice operation.

Parents make sure you do your due diligence and look at the websites, camp staffs and itinerary, etc. as there aren't too many great options in the area.

We give the following ratings to Camps in the area:

Premier Basketball Camp: A+

This is the best camp in the area - hands down. Don't be fooled, this camps itinerary is truly impressive. Check out their "Staff" page and you will understand why they won an award as the best camp in the area.
Next, they just inked a deal with Kaplan Prep Test - Every camper going into 9-11th grades in September 2014, will receive a code to give access to Kaplan's On-Demand SAT / ACT Course. This is a $299.00 value - for FREE!

UPDATE: We found a bullying article regarding this camp in 2012. http://www.wjla.com/articles/2012/06/mother-says-son-bullied-by-staff-at-georgetown-camp-for-wearing...

Five-Star Baltimore: C

In our opinion, Five-Star used to be a tier one camp back in the day. However, since then things have dramatically changed. Some cities have kept a very strong program, unfortunately, the Baltimore camp has literally dropped the ball as most knowledgable coaches and players realize that you will be playing games like knockout (have heard from many parents they actually watch movies): and don't get much top quality basketball training.

However, parents that just want to drop their kids off for a fun day and let their child run around with a basketball and get some basic training, then this would be your camp. There is def a need for this type of camp, as it depends on how serious a ball player your child is and and their passion for learning the game.

FYI:  Always look for the best staff when it comes to choosing a camp. It is imperative towards running a solid program. Review each website and you will get a sense of the various pros and cons of each camp in your area.
