TOWSON, MD — The renovated district courthouse in Towson will open in mid-October, officials said. It has been closed since September to allow for repairs.

While the move was expected to take six months, the time line shifted due to the coronavirus. The pandemic delayed repairs to the HVAC system, according to officials.

In January, the courthouse operations moved to Catonsville. After the nine-month closure, all staff and judges who relocated will be moved back to Towson, authorities reported.

The Baltimore County District Courthouse at 120 East Chesapeake Avenue in Towson will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to the Maryland Judiciary.

The Towson courthouse is not the only one undergoing a change in Baltimore County. The Walker Avenue courthouse will be closing in Catonsville.

Starting Oct. 19, operations in Catonsville will shift to the newly built courthouse at 1 Rolling Cross Road in the Rolling Cross Road Professional Park. The Maryland Department of General Services owns the courthouse on Walker Avenue, which will close permanently.

“This has been an extraordinary year for judges, employees, and the public as they worked through District courthouse building moves in northern and western Baltimore County,” District Court of Maryland Chief Judge John P. Morrissey said in a statement. “We were fortunate to be able to provide continuous and seamless service throughout Baltimore County as we made much-needed repairs at the Towson District courthouse and transitioned the older Walker Avenue location to a newly built District Court complex just a few miles away within Catonsville."

Once both are open, people who have business at the Catonsville courthouse should report to the 1 Rolling Cross Road address. Those who have business at the Towson courthouse should report to the Chesapeake Avenue building.

Officials say they are putting signs up to notify the public of the courthouse moves.

There are three Baltimore County District Court locations:

  • The new Catonsville District Courthouse is at 1 Rolling Cross Road in Catonsville.
  • The Essex District Courthouse is at 8914 Kelso Drive in Essex.
  • The Towson District Courthouse is at 120 East Chesapeake Avenue in Towson.

Anyone who comes to the courthouse must wear a face covering and undergo symptom screening.

People can email the court with questions, comments and concerns about the courthouse moves at towsontempmove@mdcourts.gov. In addition to signage, FAQ sheets and transportation guides will be made available at all Baltimore County District courthouses.
