Towson to Host Washington Wizards Training Camp: Report

The NBA team reportedly plans to move a portion of preseason practice to Towson University.

The Washington Wizards will spend part of training camp at Towson University, according to Comcast SportsNet.

The Wizards will have most of their preseason training camp at their home base of the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., but the basketball players like to travel and found a dearth of hotels after one closed at the team’s previous preseason venue, George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Comcast SportsNet reported.

There are a handful of hotels nearby Towson University, including the Marriott, Sheraton and Best Western.

If the Wizards do hold the first week of training camp at Towson, it will be the first time for the team back in Maryland since the 1990s, when preseason was held at Bowie State University, The Baltimore Sun reported.

In the years since then, Towson has become more appealing to the NBA team in part because it has a new facility.

In 2013, the university opened the 117,000-square-foot SECU Arena for basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and other events. The venue can hold 5,200 people.

If the Wizards head to Towson, at least one former Tiger will be among them. Gary Neal, from the class of 2007, signed a $2.1-million deal last month for a one-year contract with the Wizards, Towson University reported.

The Wizards plan to start training camp in late September. The team would still finish training camp at the Verizon Center, according to The Washington Post.
