Towson University President Reports She Has Cancer

Towson University President Maravene Loeschke informed faculty and staff Friday that she has cancer, according to The Towerlight, the newspaper of Towson University.

News of Loeschke's diagnosis—cancer of the adrenal gland—was delivered by email, The Towerlight reported.

Located above the kidneys, adrenal glands regulate many organs and tissues throughout the body, according to the Mayo Clinic, which says adrenal cancer found early may be cured.

Loeschke's cancer was discovered in the early stages as part of a routine exam, according to The Baltimore Sun.

To treat the condition, she has already had surgery and will undergo radiation in the next six weeks, WBAL reported.

Loeschke, who said she has no symptoms, plans to continue with her normal schedule, and doctors anticipate a full recovery, The Towerlight reported.

In the event that she cannot make all appearances, Loeschke reportedly said her staff will fill in, though she hopes to resolve the medical issue so she can focus on leading the university she loves. Loeschke, 62, became the president of Towson University in 2012.
