Thoroughbred Placement Featured Horse: Sammy

TPR, Inc. would like for the community to meet Sammy, a retired Thoroughbred horse that has been placed in new home after having raced in 21 races.

Upper Marlboro-based Thoroughbred Placement Resources would like for the community to meet Sammy, one of its retired Thoroughbred horses that it has retrained and placed in new home.

Sammy is retired from the racetrack after having raced in 21 races and earning approximately $90,000.  Sammy, a bay Thoroughbred gelding, is bred by Delaware Township out of a Broad Brush mare.  He is 6 years old, stands 15.2 hands high and possesses a calm demeanor.

“Sammy is a wonderful horse,” said Kimberly Clark, founder of TPR.  “He’s a super sweet, easy-going guy with great conformation and he’s very nice mover.  He loves attention and enjoys being groomed.”

Clark believes Sammy is best suited to be a pleasure riding horse, but thinks he also has the temperament and potential to be a therapeutic riding horse.  Despite having been turned out for almost a year and having an old knee injury, he is sound and ready ride.

“The first time we saddled Sammy, he stood perfectly still, did not fuss over the mounting block and was enjoyable to ride,” said Clark.  “He also does well in the trailer and stands for the farrier.”

According to Clark, Sammy has tremendous heart and a desire to please everyone, which he demonstrated last June when he just missed winning his last race.

“We are so proud that we have been able to find a good home for this good horse,” said Clark.  “He’s ready to start his new life as an Off the Track Thoroughbred (OTTB).”

TPR is a 501(c)(3) charity that exists to improve the lives of Thoroughbred racehorses through a comprehensive, multifaceted approach.  TPR successfully transitions and retrains racehorses for other disciplines and strives to improve the reputation of the Thoroughbred by providing education and support.
