Help Plant Trees on Oct. 11 in Forest Heights

Volunteers are needed to plant 500 trees on Sat., Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to Noon at Forest Heights ES, 200 Talbert Drive, Forest Heights, MD.

The Town f Forest Heights, MD is looking for volunteers to plant 500 trees at Forest Heights Elementary School, 200 Talbert Drive, Forest Heights from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Nov. 1.  Tools will be provided, but if a volunteer has a shovel, they are asked to bring it along.

“These trees will reduce flooding that the neighbors have been experiencing from storm water runoff, replace aging trees and ensure a shady place for the students to enjoy during the hot days of summer,” Mayor Jacqueline Goodall said.  ”The trees will also help clean pollutants from storm water before it enters the Oxon Run, Potomac and the Chesapeake Bay.”

The trees were purchased from a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.   In June, Goodall receive the Prince George’s Sierra Club Group’s Walter “Mike” Maloney Environmental Steward Award.  She was also featured last month in a Voice of America broadcast for her efforts to reduce stormwater runoff throughout her community and she has also been a recipient of the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Ellen Fraites Wagner (Steward of the Year) Award in 2011.
