Pirate Fest Sails Into Upper Marlboro

The family event will feature swashbuckling reenactors and a treasure hunt.

Take a trip back in time to the 18th century, when pirates still prowled the Patuxent River, by attending Pirate Fest at Darnell’s Chance Museum in Upper Marlboro on Saturday, May 5.

The event is geared towards children ages 5 to 12, but the whole family is sure to have a blast, said Darnell’s Chance Museum docent Meghan Decker.

Upon arrival, children will be taught how to become a pirate from swabbing the decks to walking the plank. For each pirate activity they complete, children will receive coins, which they will then exchange for a map. After completing the β€œtreasure hunt,” participants will receive a prize and an honorary pirate certificate.

There will also be pirate reenactors, live music, concession stands, face painting, a pirate costume contest and more.

The Darnell’s Chance House Museum their annual Pirate fest in remembrance of the original owner of the house, merchant James Wardrop. His ships were set upon by pirates of the Patuxent in the 18th century, said Decker.

The cost of the event is $5 per person. All activities are free, though there will be a charge for concessions. Reservations are not required.

The festival will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
