Wise Football Prevails, Despite Injuries

Pumas stage a comeback to beat Bowie; will play Saturday at Northwestern.

DaLawn Parrish, the head football coach at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School, was without three starters due to injuries before Saturday's game against Bowie even began.

And then during the contest, Wise lost three more starters to injuries: cornerback Kenneth Scott-Kelow, defensive tackle Joseph Washington, and fullback Damon Price.

To make matters worse Wise trailed, 22-0, in the first half to the Bulldogs. But the Pumas came back and posted a 24-22 win and improved to 3-1 overall this season.

"The kids know how to fight," Parrish told Patch on Tuesday. "They have definitely been battle tested early in the year."

Wise, in its previous game, lost on a last-second field goal to Eleanor Roosevelt. "They know what it is like to be on the short side of it," said Parrish, who noted that about 75 percent of his team is made up of sophomores and juniors.

“Virginia Union is a good football team and they capitalized on our mistakes," Damon Wilson, the Bowie State head coach, said on the school's athletic website.
