The Chamber is the lead organizer. The Expo includes the Carroll County Health Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Office of the State’s Attorney for Carroll County and the Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS). The Expo is considered to be one of the most comprehensive programs of information that covers the prevention of substance abuse, domestic violence, and other community issues, and the services needed to help people dealing with these issues.
The Expo was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions.
This year, the Expo is something that the county, the state and the world can
participate in, according to Chamber President and CEO Mike McMullin.

“The Expo is an annual event hosted and presented by the Chamber that addresses the epidemic of drugs, which has brought devastation before and during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said McMullin. “We are building awareness as a first step. We want to make kids and parents aware of the dangers to help combat this problem. If we attack the epidemic problem in unison, using an online platform like we are using for the Expo, we can touch even more folks than ever before. The Expo shines light on a whole host of additional issues such as awareness of domestic violence and mental health.”
“Carroll County Public Schools middle and high schools have participated in the Drug and Violence Awareness Expo from the beginning,” said Director of Middle Schools Tom Hill. “The opportunity to hear the speakers, interact with the vast number of agencies, and support services has been outstanding. The Chamber is to be commended for showing all of our students the many supports they have available to them in Carroll County. This is truly a team effort to combat the ever-present needs of our community.”
Topics to be covered include drug and alcohol abuse
prevention and recovery programs; drunk driving; sexual assault; suicide
prevention; dangers of vaping; cyber bullying; mental health and relationships;
and more.
Several speakers, who have been pre-recorded include:
Lieutenant Governor Floyd Rutherford—The Governor’s Message (previously recorded in a past year)
Executive Director Glenn Fueston—Maryland’s Fight on Drugs (previously recorded in a past year)
Tim Weber—You’re Not Alone
Courtney Spittal—Joining the Fight Against Drug Abuse
Melanie Anderson—Creating a Life of Intention
Beth Schmidt and Tammy Lofink-- Start Now!
Demonstration videos will include CPR; the K-9 unit; a mobile crime lab; self- defense; water rescue; jaws of life; and NARCAN® training.
Exhibits from over 50 law enforcement, health community,
community services and youth activity agencies will be featured. Information
about their services along with contact information will be available.
The website allows students from public schools and private
schools to participate, as well as home-schooled students. Carroll County
Public Schools (CCPS) students in grades eight to 12 will visit the Expo online,
which will follow the same format as in previous years. Students are asked to attend
a presentation by one of the speakers and time is allowed to visit the various
demonstrations. Teachers will design a scavenger hunt of the various exhibitors.
In the past, at the live event, students attended the Expo for about
one-and-a-half hours during the school day. With the website, teachers can now access
it any time that suits the class schedule and will be able to refer back to the
content throughout the year.
McMullin said that others outside of Carroll County have
been interested in also holding a similar Expo and that inquiries have come
from overseas. He said that the topics that the Expo covers are universal and
affect everyone, everywhere.
