Victoria Shoe, a former student at West Middle School and an incoming ninth grader at Westminster High School, has been selected as the 2021 Maryland Children’s Mental Health Student Champion of the Year by the Children’s Mental Health Matters! Campaign.

As an eighth grade student at West
Middle School, Victoria created the concept for a bulletin board to support and promote positive mental
health. She developed a dragon theme and created artwork and printed digital
pictures to go along with the theme. She also created the slogan for both the
main title and each written piece under every picture.
The concept she created followed a dragon from being in the egg to cracking out of the egg, becoming a baby dragon, and finally maturing and having wings to fly – all of which connected to growing with support and opening ourselves up to the possibilities, to reaching good mental health and developing our wings and soaring free with good mental health. Students were encouraged to take their picture in front of the wings showing they were supporting good mental health.
According to West Middle school counselor Beth Buckalew, who supported the project and nominated her for the award, “Victoria did an amazing job following through with the entire process of creating the board and she put many hours into the design and creation. I was proud to nominate her as a Student Champion in support of her amazing efforts to openly communicate the importance of positive mental health. She is a real school Champion!”
The Children’s Mental Health Matters! Campaign brings together non-profits, schools, and other agencies with the following goals: raising public awareness of the importance of children’s mental health and substance use, helping reduce the stigma of mental health, and connecting families, educators and providers throughout Maryland with resources to help children.
