Falcons Down Owls on Mat

Foes of different feathers faced off in wrestling.

Winters Mill, behind nine pins, downed cross-town foe Westminster, 57-20 in wrestling Monday evening.

It was the host Falcons' first home meet of the young season. Winters Mill improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the county as they took care of Manchester Valley last week.

The Owls are 2-2 on the season with both losses coming in the county to the Falcons and Liberty.

''Everybody knows each other really well. These kids have been wrestling each other for years and known each other in school. We knew coach (Henry) Mohlhenrich has a very young team, and our team is young, but a little more experienced,'' said Winters Mill coach John Lowe.

Winters Mill went up 18-0 before the Owls got on the scoreboard. Points came on three pins by Flavio Valdez-Cortez, Taylor Logue and Christian Rose. All three are sophomores.

Tyler Green got the Owls on the board by pinnng John Sigler in 19 seconds.

''He's tough. He's one of my wrestlers that does have a lot of experience. I've been coaching Tyler Green since he was about 6 years old. He's got plenty of experience,'' said Mohlhenrich.

The Falcons reeled off three more pins to go up 36 to 6. Notching the pins were Gunner Cullison, Wes Cook and Keith Steine.

Westminster got some points back with major decisions at 145 and 152 by Darian Meador and Ryan Eckenbarger.

Chase Cullison won an 8-1 decision over Clint Martin before Marshall Chang scored another pin for the home team.

Bradley Metcalf scored the Owls last points of the night with a pin in 4:33.

The Falcons ended the match with pins by Brandon Burndley and Justin Kozera.

''I thought they had some very solid athletes and guys to be reckon with during the year. I thought we looked fairly professional. Coach Mohlhenrich is a class act. He will do a great job there,'' said Lowe.

''We will get better every week. I have such a young team. I got guys out there starting tonight that never wrestled junior league. By the end of the season, we might be halfway respectable," said Mohlhenrich.
