Northwest Middle Student Creates MSDE Math Logo
A Carroll County student designed the logo symbolizing mathematics in Maryland.

CARROLL COUNTY, MD — A student at Northwest Middle School designed the winning logo for the Maryland State Department of Education's Mathematics Department. Officials from Carroll County Public Schools announced the accomplishment on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Leilani Wiswakarma, an eighth grade student at Northwest Middle School, created the logo in response to a call for entries from state education officials last spring asking students to develop a logo for the state's math department. Their creations were to signify mathematics in Maryland.
Students from across the state submitted entries, and teachers were asked to vote on three finalists in the fall that were published in the MSDE Mathematics Fall Newsletter. Wiswakarma's entry received 75 percent of the votes, officials said.
