Winters Mill Finishes Second in State Dual Meet

Winters Mill came up short in their first trip to the state dual meet as they lost to Glenelg, 35-25.

The Falcons came into the tourney as the third seed in Class 2A/1A and Glenelg was the top seed. In the first match of the day, Winters Mill beat undefeated and second seeded Owings Mills, 40-29. The Gladiators dumped fourth seeded Rising Sun to make the finals.

The Falcons and Gladiators split the first two matches and Glenelg took control by winning four matches to take a 27-10 lead.

Justin Kozera took the mat at 285 and got the Falcons back on the board with a pin. Flavio Valdez followed with a hard won decision, but Winters Mill couldn’t get any closer as the top seed took the next two matches. Gunner Cullison was awarded a forfeit in the final match to close out the scoring for the Falcons.

"There were a couple of ones that could have gone either way. I think 215 could have gone, its goes to overtime we win that, it’s a little closer. Who knows about momentum. Their kids did a great job. They didn’t get pinned where we were looking for pins and they got a couple where we were looking to turn them away,’’ said Falcon coach John Lowe.

In Winters Mill’s first match, the score was tied at 12 when Larry Johnson and Allen Corbin stepped on the mat at 160. Johnson had a 10-1 lead on Winters Mill’s Corbin, when he picked him up and slammed him to the mat. Corbin couldn’t continue and was awarded the win. Owings Mills was docked a team point.

"We were very young this year. We thought winning this year might be a stretch. We only have two guys leaving really from the lineup for next year and you got to feel hopeful. All these young guys. I have a ton of sophomores and freshmen that participated in a state finals. You're not going to have weak knees next year,’’ said Lowe.

Next up for the Falcons is the county tournament next Saturday at Westminster High School.
