WHEATON, MD — Montgomery County will play host to the 10th annual Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival this weekend, featuring a mix of entertainment and family-friendly activities.
The festivities run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and start with the parade before the focus shifts to an afternoon of art and performances. Admission is free.
The parade steps off at 10 a.m. from the intersection of Ennalls and Grandview avenues before winding through the downtown area along Georgia Avenue and around the Wheaton Triangle before finishing at Marian Fryer Town Plaza at 2424 Reedie Drive.
The Wheaton parade will feature more than 20 pieces that officials say will be carried, pushed, pulled, worn or performed as they make their way through the area. Musicians, dancers, artists and local organizations will be part of the procession.
Organizers say the best places to catch the parade are from sidewalks along Grandview Avenue, Triangle Lane and the west side of Georgia Avenue. Attendees can expect parade participants to make stops along the way for dancers and bands to perform.
Once the parade portion comes to an end at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza, visitors will be able to partake in the festival, which will host more than 50 artists.
Additional performances begin at 12 p.m. and will run through the remainder of the afternoon across three stages and two dance floors.
Between performances, there will be a variety of activities at the Kids' Zone, which include face painting, balloon twisting and chalk art, among others.
A biergarten featuring local brews and food vendors will be on site.
Visitors will also have a chance to add their own work to a community mural that starts during the parade and continues throughout the day.
The festival is within walking distance of the Wheaton Metro Station on the Red Line, and will be accessible by Metrobus and the Ride On bus service.
Although organizers recommend public transportation, free parking will be available at the WMATA garage on Veirs Mill Road, near the Wendy's entrance. Residents may also park at the Price-Fern lot behind Safeway.
The Ennalls Avenue lot will offer additional parking after 12 p.m.
