WHEATON, MD — A Montgomery County Police officer who collapsed while chasing a shoplifting suspect on foot at Westfield Wheaton has been taken to a local hospital. According to authorities, several officers responded to a shoplifting report at the mall on Veirs Mill Rd. around 12:38 p.m. Officials could not confirm how many suspects were involved. However, they say at least one suspect fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, at about 1:05 p.m., one of the officers collapsed, police said. Officer Rick Goodale told Patch that a fellow officer started rendering first aid before an ambulance arrived. The officer who collapsed was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.
