Road Closures, Power Outages, Persist in Irene's Wake

Montgomery County urges drivers to use caution on the road.

Power outages continue in parts of Montgomery County in wake of Hurricane Irene, which brought strong winds and heavy rain to the area over the weekend.

Deborah Hagberg, a spokeswoman for the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, said this morning that Sligo Creek Parkway remained closed between Piney Branch Road and New Hampshire Avenue.

Meanwhile, Alert Montgomery, an alert system employed by the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security in times of emergency, crisis or severe weather, reported that the county is still experiencing power outages as a result of the hurricane.

Drivers should use caution, treat every intersection without power as a four-way stop, and allow themselves extra time for their commute, especially along Route 29 where there are several traffic lights still without power north of Randolph Road, the alert system said.
