Week in Review: First Week in Wheaton

Small businesses and lots of schools

On Wednesday, Wheaton Patch finally opened its virtual doors, and it was a busy, news-filled week.

Wheaton's redevelopment plans continue on, and local business owners have mixed feelings about what revitalization means. Dog owners had their own worries about if the money from new dog park permit fees will be reinvested in the parks themselves.

As the summer fades, Brookside Gardens harvests their food garden, and shares some tips on how you can grow your own. The first - and last - concert in the summer series, with the Nighthawks and Los Fabulocos, was well attended.

While the first day of school isn't until tomorrow, there's a lot going on with the school system. The second-longest serving superintendent of Montgomery County Schools, Jerry Weast, announced his retirement Tuesday, while new principal Dr. Eric Minus started his year at Kennedy High School.

Kindergardeners will have a slightly different experience this year at Oakland Terrace, while an open house day was the site of tensions between the administration and a group of parents.

We're looking forward to another week of stories and updates. Patch will be at the Maryland State Fair all week. I'll be there on Sunday and Monday (yes, Labor Day!) so stop by and say hi!
