Week in Review: Not a Slow News Week
First day of school, features and a crisis in Silver Spring.
The first full week of Wheaton Patch was far more intense than I had expected.
Wednesday afternoon, Tamika Smith, the editor of Silver Spring Patch, and myself were at the scene to cover the hostage crisis at the Discovery building in downtown Silver Spring, along with a fabulous Patch staff who were helping us.
On Thursday morning, I got a report that the police had blocked off Kimberly Street in Wheaton. After a few hours, it turned out that .

But it wasn't all mayhem. Monday morning, school started for children in the county. We covered the first morning of school for Highland Elementary School, covered the first games for high school sports and looked into what cutbacks in the police department's budget means for high schools.
Our weekly police blotter brought attention to a series of burglaries in the area around Wheaton High, as well as others in the area. We'll continue looking into that, as well as other crime reported in the area.

In anticipation of Labor Day, we checked out the cheapest gas in town, as well as asked how people are coping with Metro closures during this long weekend.
